Today I continued with the listing of correspondence. The Archives also hosted a training for departmental employees regarding the correct way to handle materials. The presentation included a PowerPoint presentation and a live demonstration to staff. This standardized training that allows employees to be kept up to date on important policies, best practice, and archival information is a key principle in management as well as good archival practice.
I found a funny letter today regarding an incident on Manners Street. A woman was walking down the street pushing her child in a "perambulator" when a street cleaning cart rolled by, spraying both the woman and child and drenching them with water. The letter from her concerned spouse also contained a newspaper clipping regarding the incident. The man exhorted the council to remind the street cleaners that their work should be done with more attention so that other women would not have to endure the suffering involved with such an incident nor be burdened with the expense of a ruined dress.
With a 17,000 item backlog this listing project, while sometimes tedious is one of importance, allowing the Archive to make these items available to researchers.
